If you're from a university outside of Edmonton, here are a few suggestions on where you can spend a night or few, cheaply:
- St. John's Ukranian Institute is normally a student residence, but they'll take in students for a few nights also. Their cost is roughly $30 to $50 and you can book your room online. They need only a few days' notice but it's pretty much guaranteed they'll be able to accommodate you. It's about a 10 minute walk from the residence to the conference location and the folks there are really nice.
- Here is the application form to stay in St. John's Institute(SJI). Submit the completed form to SJI.
- SJI requires a $75 dollar damage deposit, which IS REFUNDABLE at the end of your stay.
- Campus Towers is a hotel located even closer, but it's a bit more pricey. Their rooms range from about $130 to $170 per night.
- Another way to travel cheaply is by staying at local hostels, such as Edmonton's Hostelling International (HI) hostel.
In case you want to get around town and see what Edmonton is like, check out the Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) website. ETS also provides a convenient trip planner.
As far as things to see and do, there are plenty (see About Edmonton). We recommend:
- The indoor amusement park (including the world's 12th largest roller coaster!) at West Edmonton Mall (WEM)
- WEM itself
- The indoor water park at WEM
- Night life on Whyte Avenue
- Fort Edmonton historic site (very cool)
- The Telus World of Science
- The Muttart Conservatory (kind of boring unless you're into plants)
Just google any of these for more info, and enjoy your stay in Edmonton!
